Introduction

To follow the world trends and the development of future bioscience, College of Life Science was founded by National Taiwan University in 2003. The College of Life Science currently has near 85 full time faculty members. The combined force offers the best quality academic programs in Taiwan in all modern biological sciences, such as molecular biology, systematic biology, biochemical sciences, biotechnology, and ecological studies. Many of our faculty members are leading figures in their specialized fields. More than ten members are chairmen or chairwomen in Ministry of Science and Technology committees. Many have received MOST Awards of Excellence in Research.

The undergraduate departments recruit new students between 100 and 120 yearly. The high mark required in the college entrance examination ensures that the admitted students are the cream of their generation. The graduate institutes grant 120 to 220 new students in the master programs and 25 to 110 in Ph.D. programs in recent years. There are presently near 800 graduate students enrolled. The high teacher to student ratio guarantees a high quality research and learning environment.

The twelve-floored Life Science Building is the home to the majority of the College of Life Science. The building houses spacious faculty study rooms, lecture rooms, conference rooms, an animal colony, a museum, and state of the art facilities in teaching laboratories and core research laboratories, such as high notch computer systems for bioinformatics research, electronic and confocal microscopes for molecular biology research. In addition, the ichthyologists and botanists in the college boast the best specimen collections in fish and plants in Taiwan. The Biochemical Sciences Building and a portion of the Agricultural Chemistry Building, and associated facilities are also part of the College of Life Science.

The specialty of the faculty in the College of Life Science embraces the breadth and depth of life sciences. Their study organisms scale from virus and bacteria to cypress and whales; research topics range from molecular and cellular biology to landscape ecology and global change; research interests extend from basic theories to practical applications. Diverse as they are, the research institutes in the College of Life Science are one unified unit. The rigorous scholarly collaboration among institutes and tight connections among faculty in teaching and research make the College of Life Science a strong vessel in the voyage of discovering the exciting patterns and mechanisms in life science.
